The Painting
On the morning of 22 January 1879, after arriving at iSandlwana from Rorke's Drift, Lt.-Col. Durnford, NNC, set out from the camp in pursuit of what he thought was a small party of Zulus that had been sighted. In actual fact, he was facing King Cetshwayo's Zulu Army, advancing to attack the British camp that in a short space of time would be annihilated.
After carrying out a fighting withdrawal, Durnford stopped his men in a donga - now known as 'Durnford's Donga' - from where they poured fire into the advancing Zulus. Witnesses describe Durnford standing up in the open cheering on his men with words of encouragement and helping to unblock jammed weapons of his men (with his one good arm).
Scorning the chance of escape, Durnford would fall back on the camp where he would die fighting with his men in a last stand from which none survived.
