11 Victoria Crosses were awarded for actions at Rorke's Drift 22-23 January 1879. One of the recipients was Private Fred Hitch VC, 2/24th, who from the start of the battle made every effort to be in amongst the hottest of the fighting. After being shot and having his upper arm shattered, he exchanged weapons with his officer, Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead, and using his officer's revolver, continued to fight until becoming faint from loss of blood. Hitch then proceeded to hand out ammunition to his comrades fighting on the barricades until eventually passing out.
 
In Hitch's own words:
 
'They rushed up madly notwithstanding the heavy losses they had already suffered and it was in this struggle that I was shot. They pressed us very hard, several of them mounting the barricade. I knew this one had got his rifle presented at me but at the same time I had got my hands full in front and I was at the present when he shot me through my right shoulder blade and passed through my shoulder which splintered the shoulder bone very much, as I have had in all 38 pieces of broken bone taken from my shoulder. I tried to keep my feet, but could not. He could have assegaid me had not Bromhead shot him with his revolver. Bromhead seemed sorry when he saw me down bleeding so freely, saying 'Mate, I am very sorry to see you down.' I was not down for more than a few minutes stripped in my shirtsleeves with my waist belt on and fleece straps. I put my wounded arm under my waist belt and was able to make another stand getting Bromhead's revolver and with his assistance in loading it I managed very well with it.'
