Reverend George Smith, one of the unsung heroes of Rorke's Drift. Remaining at the station throughout the battle, Reverend Smith busied himself by distributing ammunition to the men on the barricades, chastising those who swore whilst urging them to fight on.
'Don't swear men, don't swear, but shoot them boys, shoot them!'
William Jones VC said that 'a notable figure I remember seeing there's the Rev. Smith, the chaplain, who spent his time handing out cartridges to the defenders as well as administering spiritual consolation to the wounded'.
Private Caleb Wood said: 'One brave man moved about among us unarmed all the succeeding night doing good work by serving out ammunition. This was Rev. George Smith. How he escaped I do not know. He was constantly giving encouragement, first to one man and then another.'
Lieutenant Harford noted that 'The part which the Rev. Smith played in the defence, and the splendid example he set throughout that terrible night, outright to have earned for him the V.C.'
