HARDCOVER - EXPECTED FOR PUBLICATION IN AUGUST 2025
This book tells the overlooked story of Channel Islanders who risked everything to escape from the German Occupation during the Second World War. Some of whom paid the ultimate price. It explores their motivation for wanting to escape, the penalties if caught, reaction of those left behind, consequences and the changing attitudes to escape of the civilian government.
It is also a tale of espionage as British military intelligence found the information smuggled out to be of great use for the planning of the liberation of the Channel Islands from the tyranny of the German forces. They also brought important news on conditions both to the government and to fellow Channel Islanders cut off from their loved ones.
It is no mean feat to escape, often in a small boat, from islands so far from England where there were at times one German for every three civilians on islands that had been turned into fortresses. Approximately 10% of the concrete used in the entire Atlantic wall was poured into defences in these islands.
Now is the time to tell the story of their bravery.
