James Dix

As co-founders of the Victorian Association — a leading historical reenactment group dedicated to the accurate portrayal of British military life during the Victorian era — Tim and James bring a unique blend of scholarly research and practical insight to their work. Their efforts have united several groups under a single, historically rigorous organisation focused on education, authenticity, and commemoration. With a combined experience of over 50 years recreating the 24th Regiment of Foot — on television, in educational video, and at numerous events both in the UK and in Zululand — Tim Rose and James Dix are widely recognised for their commitment to historical accuracy and engaging interpretation.

Their upcoming book offers a richly illustrated and detailed study of the 24th Regiment of Foot during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Rather than focusing on battlefield events, it explores the regiment through its uniforms, equipment, and accoutrements, as well as the drill, discipline, and daily conditions experienced by the men who served. Drawing on period sources, modern research, and their hands-on experience in the field, they provide an in-depth look at the material culture and lived realities of one of the most recognisable regiments of the Victorian Army. This title will be essential reading for students of the Anglo-Zulu War, collectors, living historians, and anyone with an interest in the British soldier of the late 19th Century.
