Tom Bard Stone

Tom Bard Stone was born and raised in the northern highlands of Scotland. For the first 20 years of his life, he knew little beyond hard work and had limited exposure to life south of the highland line. Driven by a desire for broader horizons, and despite his family's wishes, Tom joined the army and ventured south into England for the first time.

His military service in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) significantly expanded his knowledge and skills. While Tom excelled as a vehicle mechanic, he felt that his soldiering abilities were limited by the senior soldiers who were now his mentors. Seeking greater challenges, Tom applied for the All Arms Commando Course (AACC). Upon arrival in Plymouth, he discovered that his natural fitness level surpassed that of the average soldier. Successfully completing the Commando Endurance test, he was awarded the coveted green beret and joined 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery (RA).

Over the next two years, Tom gained both trade and arctic soldiering experience before moving on to join 148 Commando Forward Observation Battery. To confirm his placement, he needed to complete the All Arms P Company (AAPC), which he did with ease, solidifying his position in the unit.

Despite settling into his role, Tom felt a continuing drive to push further. He applied for selection in the 22nd Special Air Service (SAS). Unfortunately, he dislocated his collarbone during a parachute jump on Fox Covet, leading to recommendations to delay his application. Nonetheless, Tom proceeded with SAS selection in January 1987. After five rigorous months, he earned his beige beret and blue stable belt, becoming a trooper in D Squadron Mountain Troop, where he served through the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s.

Having now reached a stage in his life where he feels the need to semi-retire, he has authored the book Rebel in the Ranks, which covers his earlier life. He plans to write additional high-action sequels.
